Why the Black Community Needs Life Insurance?
“Our lives create economic value through the work we do, the businesses we build, the homes we purchase, the families we support, and the opportunities we create for others. Life insurance establishes a contractual means of transferring financial resources to the people we choose. In exchange for premiums, an insurer agrees to provide a defined death benefit when the insured dies, subject to the policy’s terms and conditions.
It may be uncomfortable to say plainly, but we will say it anyway: A community with greater life insurance participation has greater economic leverage.
Consider what happens when the financial consequences of neglect become more widely distributed. When Black patients are mistreated or overlooked, and the resulting losses affect the financial interests of insurers and other institutions, there may be stronger economic incentives to demand accountability. When communities have greater financial protection and measurable economic interests at stake, there may also be more incentive for institutions to invest in prevention, address the conditions that contribute to crime, and protect the lives and futures of young people—not simply increase policing after harm has occurred.
The reality is that economic interests often influence whose well-being receives attention, whose losses are taken seriously, and where resources are invested. Expanding life insurance participation will not, by itself, eliminate discrimination, prevent crime, or guarantee institutional accountability. But it can increase the financial resources available to our families, strengthen our economic position, and make the consequences of our losses harder to disregard. If society too often measures our value in economic terms, then we must understand the power of building, protecting, and controlling more of our own economic value.“
